Things to Do

Gran Cenote

Cenotes are like natural sinkholes, created when limestone collapses to reveal the underground river systems below. Cenote means sacred well and the Mayans built cities close to cenotes as they were a reliable water source in an otherwise dry landscape. Just two miles from Tulum is the Gran Cenote, a popular swimming and snorkeling spot of pure and fresh waters as clear as glass. You are likely to enjoy plenty of fish and turtles as well as stalactites, stalagmites and just like in any cave, lots of bats. Scuba diving can also be arranged.

Sian Ka'an

The Yucatán contains an abundance of eco-parks and natural reserves, but few compare to the breadth and natural wonder of Sian Ka'an. Just south of Tulum, the reserve contains more than 1.2 million acres of estuaries, reefs, cenotes and wetlands. Within the park, you can take tours of the local wildlife, take part in a diving or snorkeling tour or simply just walk around the beautiful and expansive park.

Snorkeling with Whale Sharks

Snorkel alongside the largest shark in the sea, the Whale Shark. At Isla Contoy, tourists from around the world are invited to experience this unique, one of a kind day in the water. These large, friendly mammals head to where the Caribbean meets the Gulf from May to September to feed on plankton making it a safe environment for marine enthusiasts to swim alongside these underwater giants.

Tulum Mayan ruins

The source of Tulum's popularity is the Tulum ruins, one of the most popular Mayan archaeological sites along the Riviera Maya. Sitting on a patch of rocky coastline just south of Tulum's downtown, the ruins showcase several templos (temples) and castillos (castles) from the once-thriving pre-Colombian Mayans.
