About "Hotel Esencia"

Hotel Esencia is a majestic 50-acre estate at the midpoint between Tulum and Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It has long enjoyed a storied past in this ancestral cradle of culture, cuisine, and comfort. Originally built as the private hideaway home of an Italian duchess on the most beautiful beach of the Mayan Riviera, it later became a hotel, and, for some time, has been a sought after destination for honeymooners seduced by the serene comforts of this timeless mansion.

A new chapter began in 2014 with the arrival of a new owner and a bold, worldly outlook on how to savor paradise. The estate’s provenance as a place of leisure for nobility is the guiding inspiration for a modern reimagining. The Main House remains the hotel’s centerpiece, around which footpaths lead to only 29 suites and villas where guests enjoy genuine privacy and top flight hospitality. Ideally situated far from huge resorts and the roar of pleasure boats, the immaculate bay of Xpu-Ha is a natural haven where each year sea turtles make their nests. Hotel Esencia invites the happy few who know how rare it is to find a place that is truly unique, to make it their home in the tropics.

Things to Do

Rio Secreto underground river tour.

In this surreal locale near Playa del Carmen, you can observe natural history dating back millions of years, as you hike and swim through a route of about 1 km full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Go deep inside an underground cave, where you'll experience true silence among some of the most dramatic mineral formations in the world!

Scuba Diving

Enjoy two scuba tanks at two different depth according to your level of experience. Deep dives are also available on Playa del Carmen or Tulum for certified scuba divers.

Sian Kaan

Take an awe-inspiring boat tour into the lagoons of Boca Paila and Caapechen, via a labyrinth of natural mangrove canals and lagoons in search of the occasional crocodile sunbathing on a secluded shore and you have the opportunity to view various types of tropical birds. Along the way, you will see a magnificent Mayan temple as well as a stunning array of flora and fauna, including exotic butterflies, migratory birds, and native orchids, to name a few. If you are lucky, you may even spot one or two manatees swimming to the surface for air.

Swim with sea turtles just a few feet from the shore of the hotel beach, or with a guide in the deep sea

Tulum Mayan ruins

Tulum, the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city, is one of the best preserved coastal Mayan cities in the Yucatan. The highlight of this archaeological site is the Temple of the Frescoes, which has spectacular figurines of the 'diving god.'
